CALL FOR PAPERS – IAEP at the APA, Dec. 27-30, 2013

IAEP (2)Meeting of The International Association for Environmental Philosophy at the annual meeting of the American Philosophical Association—Eastern Division, December 27-30, 2013, Baltimore, MD, USA – Marriott Waterfront.

The International Association for Environmental Philosophy (IAEP) invites paper proposals in the form of full (1-2 page) abstracts.  Proposals for either individual papers or sessions organized around a specific topic (3-4 presenters) will be considered.

The deadline for submission of abstracts is Monday, April 29, 2013.

Notice of selection will arrive by early June.  Note that all presenters must be members of IAEP at the time of the conference.

Please send 1-2 page (single-spaced) proposals in Word format to IAEP Secretary Steven Vogel.  Since individual and panel proposals are chosen through an anonymous review process, each submission should contain two attachments: (1) a cover letter that provides detailed contact information(including physical and electronic addresses and academic affiliation) of the author(s).  In addition, if you anticipate the need for audio-visual equipment should your proposal be accepted please indicate exactly what will be required in this letter (we cannot guarantee it but every effort will be made to accommodate your request). (2) The proposal itself, without any identifying information as to the author(s). In the case of panel proposals, a description of the theme of the panel should be included as well as proposals for each of the papers in the panel.

The International Association for Environmental Philosophy offers a forum for the philosophical discussion of our relation to the natural environment.  Embracing a broad understanding of environmental philosophy, IAEP encourages not only discussions of environmental ethics, but of environmental aesthetics, ontology, theology, the philosophy of science, political philosophy, ecofeminism, and the philosophy of technology.  IAEP also welcomes a diversity of approaches to these issues, including those inspired by Continental philosophy, the history of philosophy, and the tradition of American philosophy.

This will be a joint appointment: 75% in the HPS program in Lyman Briggs College (LBC), 25% in the Department of Fisheries and Wildlife (FW; in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources). Founded in 1967, LBC (lymanbriggs.msu.edu) is a vibrant undergraduate, residential, liberal arts college at MSU focusing on the study of science and its impact on society. Bridging the two cultures, the LBC curriculum integrates natural sciences and mathematics courses with courses in HPS. The LBC student body is 60% women and 20% students of color; also, 20% belong to MSU’s Honors College. Faculty work closely with students in small classes and with student groups such as the Briggs Multi-cultural Alliance and Women in Science. The joint appointment in FW is part of MSU’s investment in cross-college collaboration. This position is part of an expanding university-wide program in environmental science and policy (ESPP) and the undergraduate Science, Technology, Environment and Public Policy Specialization, and complements the existing strength in the philosophy department with its doctoral concentration in environmental philosophy. The successful candidate will teach three undergraduate courses on topics in the philosophy of science, technology, and the environment, and a joint (LBS, FW) upper-level undergraduate or graduate course in environmental ethics and philosophy. Some thesis supervision. Usual non-teaching duties. Some summer work available. Applicants will be expected to maintain an independent research program focusing on the integration of environmental philosophy into environmental policy.
