CFP – Phenomenology and the Environment

northern lightsIn the last ten years there has been an explosion of writing about the contributions phenomenology can make to our understanding of the environment.  The volume, proposed by Rowman & Littlefield, would be a compilation of essays reflecting the work of contemporary practitioners of phenomenology into the core questions of environmental philosophy.  The sense of “phenomenology” here is an expansive one, meant to include not only traditional varieties, but also those, for example, informed by more existential, hermeneutic, post-structuralist, or post-phenomenological approaches and figures.

Call for papers for a special issue of PhaenEx. The Journal of Existential and Phenomenological Theory and Culture (EPTC/TCEP) on “Current Developments in Animal and Food Ethics”/ “Récents développements en éthique animale et en éthique alimentaire”

We are looking for papers related (but not limited to) the following:
→ veganism and carnism
→ animal rights and welfare (as well as the recent political shift in animal ethics)
→ critical perspectives on mainstream representations of animals
→ feminist perspectives and relational ethics
→ critical analysis of food imagery and discourses (i.e. advertising campaigns, clichés, etc.)
→ legal and practical difficulties of exposing the conditions in which animals live and die in farming, zoos, circuses and laboratories
→ the welfarist/abolitionist debate
→ the recent ag-gag law in the US
→ ecofeminism and environmentalism

Deadline is July 1st 2013 and all papers will be peer-reviewed.

→ aux perspectives critiques sur les représentations populaires des animaux (campagnes publicitaires, clichés, etc.)

ISEE Logo #2Submissions are invited for the International Society for Environmental Ethics (ISEE) sessions at the 2014 Central Division Meeting of the American Philosophical Association (APA).  The meeting will be held February 26 to March 1, 2014 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago, IL.

ISEE invites submissions of individual papers (approximately 20 minutes running time) or proposals for themed sessions (particular topics, author-meets-critics, etc.).  People working in any area of ethics concerning environmental issues are encouraged to submit proposals.

Submission Procedure:

  • For individual paper submissions, please submit either: (1) a full paper (approx. 3000 words), or (2) a 300-word abstract.
  • For themed sessions, please submit the proposed session title, a brief description of the session, names of all those participating, and titles for each paper.  Paper abstracts (of up to 300 words) are strongly encouraged.  Participants should be confirmed as willing to attend if the session goes forward.
  • Materials should be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format to Allen Thompson at allen.thompson@oregonstate.edu. Please include “ISEE/APA” in the subject line.

The deadline for submission is August 15, 2013.
Decisions will be made by mid-September.
