Call for Papers
The Thirteenth Annual Meeting on Environmental Philosophy
June 29th – July 2nd, 2016
Pace University, New York City
Theme: “Environmental Ethics and Economics: Values & Choices”

Many academic disciplines have given voice to the pressing tensions between economic growth and environmental and social degradation calling for alternatives like economies of scale – sustainable development, steady state. With a few notable exceptions, environmental ethicists have addressed questions of economic impact on the environment most often indirectly through topics like animal welfare, biodiversity, climate change, future generations, natural value(s), population, pollution, sustainability, etc. This conference asks the question: Can environmental philosophy avoid a sustained critique of the current political-economic system and remain a credible participant in the environmental community? In other words, if it is the case, as some influential critics have argued, that the social and economic order in which we live is the single systemic cause for planetary ecological crisis, can we with good conscience remain relatively silent. Topics remain within the purview of standard areas of environmental ethics listed above but the approach would be the impact economics has on those areas. Categories could include:

Environmental and market values
Are the choices of Homo economicus rational?
Sustainable development or unlimited economic growth
Valuing ecological systems
Is there an alternative to neoliberal capitalism?
Compatibility between ecology and economics
Environmental justice
Instruction for Submissions:

Submit 250 word abstracts for 20 minute papers, as well as proposals for multi-participant sessions, to both Robert Chapman (rchapman@pace.edu) and Ben Hale (bhale@colorado.edu)
Please anonymize all paper abstracts (including PDF submissions)
Please do not submit panels without a participation commitment from all proposed participants
Full papers must be available on the ISEE website one month prior to the conference. Papers will be summarized by respondents at the conference rather than read in their entirety, in order to maximize time for discussion.
