JOB – Asst. Prof., Sustainable Dev., Appalachian State University

The Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Department at Appalachian State University invites applications for a tenure-track, nine-month faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning August 2015.

Applicants must be broadly trained, with expertise in Culture and Environment, with experience in the environmental humanities and/or the humanistic social sciences and situated in the larger context of sustainable development. The area of specialization is open. Must have a PhD by the beginning of the appointment.

The successful candidate will have the ability to teach courses in global and/or postcolonial environmental literature, environmental humanities, and upper-level coursework in the candidate’s area of expertise. Applicants should have a demonstrated commitment to teaching and research and a strong desire to contribute to a vibrant, growing department. We welcome applications from candidates whose work links two or more disciplines. The Goodnight Family Sustainable Development Department at Appalachian State University is committed to building a culturally diverse educational environment.

The teaching load is three courses per semester for faculty with an active research agenda. Faculty must be able to maintain a productive level of scholarship and participate regularly in curriculum development, student advisement, and service activities.

Applications should include: 1) a letter of interest that includes discussion of relevant scholarly research and teaching philosophy; 2) a curriculum vitae, including contact information for at least three references; and 3) a 500-word maximum statement articulating your approach to the interface of sustainable development and Culture and Environment, including a discussion of how your work will complement the department’s existing emphases on sustainable agriculture, critical development studies, and environmental studies.
