The Department of Culture and Society invites applications for a position as professor with special responsibilities (MSO) in applied ethics with a particular emphasis on bioethics. The professorship is a fixed-term employment for a period of 5 years and is available from 1 August 2014.

The position
We are looking for a candidate to develop the department’s activities in the field of applied ethics. The professor will be heading the present Centre for Bioethics and Nanoethics and is expected to strengthen the coordination of research initiatives within this broad field. In the application, the applicant is expected to outline his or her vision for the development of a comprehensive collaboration on interdisciplinary ethical research at Aarhus University in a national and international context.

The successful applicant will be expected to contribute to Aarhus University’s activities in the areas of research, education, talent development and knowledge exchange. The applicant is also expected to make active contribution to the academic environment of the subject area.

Research
Candidates for the professorship with special responsibilities will be expected to demonstrate expertise and profound knowledge in the field of applied ethics. The candidate should have extensive research experience in the field of bioethics. Additional research experience in environmental ethics and animal ethics is an asset.

Education
Applicants should be prepared to contribute to the department’s teaching and student supervision at all levels (BA, MA and PhD) in the field of applied ethics and especially in bioethics. This includes contributions to further development of already comprehensive research-based teaching activities in collaboration with the Faculty of Health and the Faculty of Science and Technology.

Talent development
Applicants should be prepared to participate in PhD and post-doctoral training and supervision including teaching and development of cross-faculty PhD courses.

Knowledge exchange
The successful applicant will be expected to participate in knowledge exchange with society in relation to the above-mentioned field of research through, for example, public-sector consultancy, research reports for other social stakeholders and effective communication of research results.

Qualifications
The applicant must be able to document:
• Experience with independent research at international level including research innovation documented by continuous academic publications
• Experience with managing larger research projects
• Relevant teaching and student supervision qualifications at all levels within the field of applied ethics (BA, MA and PhD)
• Experience with public-sector consultancy and research dissemination.

Given the increasingly international focus of the programme, the applicant will be expected to teach in English.
