The Faculty of Environmental Studies (FES) at York University, Toronto,
invites applications for the tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant
Professor in Food Studies to commence July 1, 2014. A PhD in a related
field is required at the time of appointment. We are seeking applicants
working in the field of food and culture, especially those doing arts-based
research and cultural production. We also welcome applicants with the
capacity to conduct community-based research on local food and social
justice issues in Toronto, such as urban agriculture and food planning. The
successful candidate will have outstanding potential in a field that
combines the cultural, social, political, economic, and ecological
dimensions of food and food systems.
Applicants should have excellent publication records and practical
experience and be able to provide leadership in interdisciplinary research
and action in the area of Food Studies. The successful candidate will also
have a demonstrated capacity to teach skills related to analysis and
engagement in this field. FES has an existing strength in policy and
regulatory analysis of food systems. We seek to support and expand our
research and teaching programs in food studies. We welcome applicants with
expertise in the fields of food justice, food sovereignty and engagement in
food movements. Project management skills would also be an asset. The
successful applicant will be involved in the Faculty’s growing partnership
with Black Creek Community Farm, the Maloca community garden and our native
plant garden.
Candidates must have teaching experience and be able to contribute to
teaching and research at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. The
successful candidate must be suitable for prompt appointment to the Faculty
of Graduate Studies. The ability to contribute to one or more of the
Faculty’s certificate or diploma programs is desirable. These include
undergraduate certificates in Community Arts Practice, Urban Ecologies,
Geographic Information Systems and Remote Sensing, Graduate Diplomas in
Business & the Environment and Environmental/Sustainability Education, and
the accredited Planning Program.
FES is a unique interdisciplinary Faculty that adopts a broad definition of
environment including natural, built and social environments. The Faculty
has a strong social and environmental justice orientation and values
applied and action-oriented research. More information about the Faculty of
