Michigan State University, East Lansing, MI. The Department of Philosophy invites applications at the full or associate level for a tenure system position in AOS: Environmental Philosophy. AOC: Open. Appointment will be in the Department of Philosophy, College of Arts and Letters, in research partnership with AgBioResearch and the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.
MSU’s philosophy department has initiated a doctoral concentration in environmental philosophy, broadly construed to include philosophical topics concerning animals, natural resources, climate, the philosophy of environmental science, risk analysis, gender and the environment, and environmental justice; and it seeks to complement its existing strengths in the area. Applications are encouraged from philosophers in any sub-field of philosophy whose work bears on these topics.
Successful candidates will have outstanding potential to secure external funding, a solid record of publications in philosophy, and the ability to take a leadership role in the shaping of the department’s environmental philosophy program. Contributions to the philosophy curriculum at both the graduate and undergraduate levels are expected, and opportunities are available for reaching the wider student body by teaching in the Integrated Arts and Humanities program.
Environmental philosophy complements the current departmental emphases in social and political philosophy, and philosophy of healthcare. The department also houses a graduate specialization in ethics and development, and is affiliated with interdisciplinary programs in ethics and policy in food and agriculture, peace and justice studies, gender in a global context, African and African-American studies, and ethics and humanities in the life sciences. Preferred starting date: August 16, 2012. Salary and benefits are competitive.
